Moody Materials: Cheese

We are interested in the possibility of using additive digital manufacturing methodologies to construct our round and irregular housing project. Simulating the behavior of different materials is a way for us to explore the possible finish quality, and use 3d scanning to incorporate these textures as a design feature in our current CAD models. We are attempting to develop a one-to-one relationship between design intent and materiality that is neither presupposed nor accidental, but each informs the other.

Pressurized cheese product was chosen as an initial test due to its availability, cost, and homogeneity. A possible connection can be drawn between concrete and the slumped cheese paste. The main issue becomes careful regulation of effector speed, relative to the constant flow rate of media. Images show proper print speed, too slow speed and resultant 'coiling', and slumped vertical walls.
